Methodology

How we collect, calculate, and display neighborhood quality scores

What is RateYourHood?

RateYourHood is a community-driven platform that aggregates subjective neighborhood ratings into a single 0–100 score for every area on the map. Residents and visitors rate neighborhoods across multiple quality-of-life categories, and those ratings are combined into an overall score that reflects the community's collective perception.

The RYH Score

Every neighborhood receives a score from 0 to 100, where higher scores indicate better perceived quality. The score is a weighted average of individual category ratings submitted by the community.

0 — Terrible50 — Average100 — Excellent

Rating Categories

Each rating is composed of multiple categories that capture different aspects of neighborhood quality. Raters score each category from 1 to 100.

🧹Street Cleanliness

Cleanliness of streets, sidewalks, and public spaces. Considers litter, waste, and general upkeep.

👃Air & Smell

Air quality and odor conditions. Considers pollution, industrial smell, and overall freshness.

Visual Aesthetics

Visual appeal of the neighborhood. Considers architecture, greenery, and overall beauty.

🚔Crime RateUS only

Perceived safety and crime level. Considers theft, personal safety, and overall security.

⚠️ScamsIndia only

Prevalence of scams and fraudulent activity. Considers tourist scams, price gouging, and fraud risk.

Score Calculation

The overall score is a weighted average of category ratings. Weights differ based on whether a region-specific 4th category is present.

4-category formula (US with Crime / India with Scams)

Score = Cleanliness × 0.30
       + Smell × 0.25
       + Aesthetics × 0.20
       + Crime or Scams × 0.25

3-category formula (legacy / no regional category)

Score = Cleanliness × 0.40
       + Smell × 0.35
       + Aesthetics × 0.25

Geographic Grid System

RateYourHood divides the map into hexagonal cells using Uber's H3 spatial indexing system. Each hexagon represents a distinct neighborhood area of roughly equal size.

  • Hexagons provide uniform area coverage without gaps or overlaps
  • Each cell aggregates all ratings submitted within its boundaries
  • Cell resolution is tuned so each hex covers approximately one walkable neighborhood
  • Cells are color-coded by their overall score — green for high, red for low, gray for unrated

Region-Specific Categories

Different regions face different quality-of-life concerns. Rather than forcing a one-size-fits-all model, RateYourHood includes a 4th rating category that is specific to each region:

🇺🇸
United States — Crime Rate

Captures perceived safety, including crime prevalence, theft risk, and personal security. Higher scores indicate safer neighborhoods.

🇮🇳
India — Scams

Captures the prevalence of scams and fraudulent activities, including tourist scams, price gouging, and deceptive practices. Higher scores indicate fewer scams.

How Scores Are Aggregated

Individual ratings are combined into a neighborhood score through the following process:

  1. User submits a rating — each category is scored 1–100 and converted to a 0–10 internal scale
  2. Per-category averages — the mean of all ratings for each category is calculated (ignoring NULL values for region-specific categories)
  3. Weighted combination — category averages are combined using the weight formula above
  4. Automatic recalculation — a database trigger recalculates the location score every time a rating is inserted or updated

Community & Trust System

To maintain rating quality and discourage manipulation, RateYourHood uses several mechanisms:

  • Trust levels — a multiplier on earned points that increases as your ratings align with community consensus
  • Vote change penalty — changing a previous rating costs points, discouraging rapid flip-flopping
  • Daily point cap — a maximum of 500 points per day keeps the playing field fair
  • Voting periods — ratings are grouped into 12-hour windows to prevent rapid re-voting on the same cell
  • First-voter bonus — the first person to rate a neighborhood cell earns double points, incentivizing coverage of unrated areas

Data Privacy

Ratings are anonymous — individual submissions are never publicly linked to specific users. Only the aggregated neighborhood score and category averages are displayed. Profile pages show a user's rating history and points, but these are only visible to the user themselves and do not reveal the specific location of other raters.

Limitations

  • Scores are based on subjective community perception and may not reflect objective conditions or official statistics
  • Areas with few ratings may have less reliable scores — the more ratings a cell has, the more accurate its score
  • Scores represent a snapshot in time and may not reflect rapid changes in neighborhood conditions
  • Regional categories (Crime Rate, Scams) are only available in their respective regions and cannot be compared across countries
  • This platform is for informational and educational purposes only. Scores should not be used as the sole factor in any decision
